"If I were the director
of a certain university library, I would make it a point that my staff would go
home with a smile. I do not like that my staff would have experienced fear or
pagkakainis when I am around. I want to treat them with dignity, respect,
unlike those other library directors who sow fear to make their staff work.
Library staff can be effective workers without using coercion."
These are words from a young
librarian, Mrs. Michelle Joy Lopez Miague Crucero of Brgy. Sta. Rosa,
Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Mitch, as called by her
friends, works as a librarian at John B.Lacson Foundation University.
She was born in Brgy. Sta.
Rosa, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
After graduation from
college, Mith immediately took a board exam for librarian, and past it.
Immediately after that, she was hired as a librarian at the John B. Lacson
Foundation University.
I asked Mith of what she
thinks of the present crop of librarians, and she told me: "Today's librarians
are very much different from those librarians of some decades ago. Unlike the
librarians of the yesteryears, today's librarians are young, approachable,
charming, wide readers. In short they are clientele friendly.
Gone are those librarians who
shouted at the noisy students in the library. Gone are those librarians who
only sit in their chairs and point to their readers where to get the books.
Gone are the days when the librarians did not take up any library subjects.
Gone are the librarians who could not catalog books nor index their serial
collections. Gone are those librarians who come to their libraries only to wait
for the 15th and the 30th day of the month.
As for the present library
science curriculum, it would be very beneficial if library science students
take up a personnel management so that they will have enough background on how
to manage their staff since registered library are usually assigned as
supervisors.
